STRUCTURED CABLING

Designing and planning a Structured Cabling plant design for your building, Data Centre or office, simplifies management of moves, additions and changes and provides you with a reliable infrastructure for data transport. This will simplify a majority of day-to-day administration headaches.

Your Structured Cabling system should ideally be designed in order to:

Documentation

Network and cabling system documentation is generated graphically using Visio or AutoCAD. Cassisus can produce professional, full colour illustrations and documentation. These typically include logical network design, cable routing, user outlet referencing, circuit presentations, and cabinet elevations.

Testing and Certification

Many people "install" network cabling, but fail to actually test it. Devices may light up at both ends of the connection, but how do you really know that you're getting 100Mbps or 1000mbps and maybe not 10Mbps? When network problems arise, do you really want to have to worry about the wiring being suspect?

Because of the demanding requirements of today's network infrastructure, the only true way to confirm that your cable infrastructure actually meets the specifications and quality level that you've purchased is to test it. We test and certify all twisted-pair cabling for Industry category compliance (where applicable). We also test and certify all our fiber optic cabling installations. HIGH PRESSURE LAMINATE RAISED FLOORING

Under-floor air distribution and access floor systems provide numerous advantages to commercial building owners and occupants. This is when compared to traditional overhead air distribution systems with "pipe and wire" data, telecommunications, and electrical distribution systems. Under-floor air systems can provide energy savings while improving comfort and indoor air quality in many applications. The additional costs of the access floor system are partially offset by savings in wiring and HVAC installation costs. In buildings where frequent remodelling is required, savings in remodelling costs alone can easily pay for the system. Improvements in occupant health and comfort due to improved indoor air quality can increase employee productivity and company profitability.

DEDICATED COOLING SYSTEMS

The specification, installation, and operation of IT environment cooling systems, are the most essential, yet least understood, of all critical IT environment processes. As the current and emerging IT hardware becomes smaller and uses the same or even more electricity than the equipment it replaced, more heat is being generated in Data Centers and Server Rooms. Precision cooling and heat rejection equipment is used to collect and transport this unwanted heat energy to the outside atmosphere.

Cassius Group provides engineering Consultancy Services, which take away the headache of choosing the most suitable, energy and cost-efficient space solution.

Air cooled systems (2-piece)

This type of system is often referred to as a DX system or split-type system. In an air cooled system half the components of the refrigeration cycle are in the computer room air conditioner (also known as a CRAC unit) and the rest are outdoors.

Air cooled self-contained systems (1-piece)

Self-contained systems locate all the components of the refrigeration cycle in one enclosure that is usually found in the IT environment.

Glycol cooled systems

This type of system locates all refrigeration cycle components in one enclosure (like a self-contained system) but replaces the bulky condensing coil with a much smaller heat exchanger.

Water cooled systems

Water cooled systems are similar to glycol cooled systems in that all refrigeration cycle components are located inside the computer room air conditioner. However, there are two important differences between a glycol cooled system and a water cooled system:

A water (also called condenser water) loop is used instead of glycol to collect and transport heat away from the IT environment
Heat is rejected to the outside atmosphere via a cooling tower instead of a fluid cooler.

DEDICATED COOLING SYSTEMS

Chilled water systems

In a chilled water system the components of the refrigeration cycle are relocated from the computer room air conditioning systems to a device called a water chiller.

Other Elements of Precision Cooling Systems:

Airflow direction

Large floor mounted systems flow air in a downward direction (down-flow) or an upward direction (up-flow) and some can even flow horizontally (horizontal flow).

Down-flow systems are used in a raised floor environment or in a non-raised floor environment when system is mounted on a pedestal.

Up-flow systems are used in an existing up-flow environment.

Horizontal flow systems should be considered for IT consolidations and IT environment renovations using a hot/cold aisle configuration.

UNINTERRUPTIBLE POWER SUPPLY (UPS)

Cassius provides a wide range of UPS solutions, which are engineered to specific load calculations.

An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), or battery backup is a device which maintains a continuous supply of electric power to connected equipment by supplying power from a separate source when utility power is not available.

A UPS is inserted between the source of power (typically commercial utility power) and the load it is protecting. When a power failure or abnormality occurs, the UPS will switch from utility power to its own power source almost instantaneously.

While not limited to any particular type of equipment, a UPS is typically used to protect computers, telecommunication equipment, or other electrical equipment where an unexpected power disruption could cause injuries, fatalities, serious business disruption or data loss. UPS units come in sizes ranging from units which will back up a single computer without monitor (around 200 VA) to units which will power entire Data Centers or buildings (several megawatts). Larger UPS units typically work in conjunction with generators.

Historically, UPS units were very expensive and were most likely to be used on expensive computer systems and in areas where the power supply is interrupted frequently. However, UPS units are now more affordable, and have become an essential piece of equipment for data centers and business computers, but are also used for personal computers, entertainment systems and more.

ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING AND PAGING

A number of the IT hardware systems within a data center may have monitoring that keeps track of everything going on 'inside the box'. However, it is necessary to manage the risk of damage to equipment and data from sources in the general space 'outside the box'.

Aside from human intrusion, elements such as heat, humidity smoke, water, etc. all pose a risk to data storage and processing machines.

Environmental monitoring probes can be added to a management system, with thresholds set and if exceeded, the system will alert administrators. The paging system can also be linked to physical security systems.

Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity

Introduction

In the past few years threats to organizations of all types and sizes have increased greatly. From terrorism to viruses, natural disasters to sabotage, firms large and small are now starting to seriously start to plan and put in place contingency plans to ensure that their businesses can re-establish operations quickly and efficiently should a facility incur a disaster of any type.

While bombs, fires and floods capture the headlines, almost 90% of all crises are nowhere near as dramatic. It is the quiet catastrophes that have the potential to damage your organizations most valuable assets; its brand and reputation.

Research has suggested that on average 20% of all organizations will experience some from of unplanned event once every five years. Whilst it is unlikely to be as catastrophic as 9/11, there is still the need to think about how businesses would cope with the more mundane events, such as power cuts or transport problems.

The fact that organizations are now so dependant on their IT systems has meant that during the last 20 years the IT department has led the way in planning how to recover from an unplanned event. But restoring data and system access is not enough when there is nowhere for your employees to answer the phones or suppliers cannot deliver critical components. Incidents as simple as an extended power loss, telecoms failure or the loss of building heating may cause critical business functions to be disabled making it difficult or even impossible to carry out normal day-to-day business activities. At worst, this could see you loosing important customers and even going out of business altogether.

And so in short we believe it now concerns every department of every organization and it's no longer just an IT issue.

Of course there are a number of options that you could choose:

Do nothing
Taking out insurance
Preparing a Business Continuity Plan

Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity

Whilst the first of these is the easiest and most common option it is not recommended for obvious reasons. The second can appear attractive, but will not cover you against loss of reputation or loss of customers. So in the long run preparing and testing a Business Continuity Plan (BCM) makes good economic sense.

Putting in place a BCM plan will help you to:

Avoid financial loss
Meet legal requirements
Avoid loss of market share
Protect the safety of assets including employees
Mitigate negative publicity

Make an early assessment of the likely costs involved in creating and maintaining your plan and budget for it. It does not need to be expensive and many insurers will look to reduce insurance premiums if you have a proven Business Continuity Plan.

With good planning you and your organization can take steps to minimize the potential impact of a disaster and ideally prevent it from happening in the first place.
